AutoDev drives software you already have. This page lists what it expects to find on your machine and what it does not support.
VS Code and the panel #
AutoDev is a VS Code extension and needs VS Code 1.90 or newer. Its panel is a view in the activity bar, under the AutoDev icon.
AutoDev is bound to a folder. With no folder open, the panel shows an empty state, Open a folder to get started., and does nothing else.
Windows only #
AutoDev supports Windows only. It has been tested on that platform alone, and support for another platform follows demand.
An agent CLI, installed and signed in #
AutoDev does not call a model API and does not bundle an agent. It drives a CLI that is already on your machine, so you need at least one of these, installed and signed in with its own login:

Without one, the panel opens and nothing runs.
A command that exits with code 0 counts as installed. The first-run checklist in the panel then reports only what AutoDev knows:
claude is not installed. AutoDev orchestrates your own authenticated CLI — it does not bundle one. claude is installed but not logged in.
Until the folder has a team confirmed on this machine, the checklist also says Allow AutoDev to run agents in this folder. Setting up the team clears it.
The login belongs to the CLI, not to AutoDev. To sign in, run the CLI in a terminal and complete its own login. AutoDev reads the sign-in state of claude with claude auth status --json, which spends no model call. It has no sign-in check for codex or agy, so for those it does not guess: the checklist asks you to sign in only when it knows you are signed out.
claude and codex are the two default CLIs, and the checklist lists whichever is missing. agy is optional: it appears in the checklist only when its binary is found.
Optional: a second provider, and cloudflared #
A second provider changes what a usage limit costs you. When a provider reports a limit, AutoDev gives the turn to the next entry in the participant's own failover list, or to a teammate whose provider is free, instead of waiting. That needs a second CLI to hand the turn to.
cloudflared is needed only for phone check-in, which you start from the panel. AutoDev looks for it on your PATH. Without it, everything else works: AutoDev serves locally only instead of failing the run.
